Uganda – 50th year celebration, cutting the cake

 

On Tuesday, 9th October, members of the Ugandan community in Ireland held an event at St Mary’s University College to celebrate the independence of Uganda in 1962, as well as four other African states, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Algeria.

The 50th year celebration event took place in the new Student Centre and College Hall and included speeches, dancing, a meal, an African choir and an African fashion show.

Representatives came from the Ugandan High Consulate in Ireland, the African community in Belfast, Ballymena Council, Belfast City Hall, the Centre for Global Education, Trócaire, the International Development Group at Stormont, and bishops and clergy from a number of the region's churches.

The keynote address was given by Professor Gladys Ganiel from Trinity College Dublin. Other speakers included Bishop Donal McKeown, the Ugandan Honorary Consul to Ireland, Mrs Sylvia Katete Gavigan, and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Tierna Cunningham.
