President Mary McAleese recognized academic excellence
at The Undergraduate Awards Ceremony 2011 in Dublin Castle on
Friday 26th October 2011. The Undergraduate Awards aim to inspire,
support and celebrate the ideas of undergraduates whilst promoting
innovation and independent thinking both within and outside of
coursework.
Four students from St Mary’s were among the top 10 per
cent of entries and were highly commended for their work.
They stood out in their categories from among 2,381 submissions
received from all the large and small universities, as well as
the higher education colleges, across the island of Ireland. In
all, 237 students were shortlisted. This represented 10% across
20 categories.
Aisling Toner, was one of eight shortlisted
in Social Science for her essay entitled "How Young Muslim
Women Perceive and Negotiate Safe and Risky Spaces in their Leisure
Lives in Belfast". It was highly commended by the judges
in the Social Studies category.
Emma McClarey, submitted her final year Education
Studies project entitled ‘A study to investigate the difficulties
faced by children with dyslexia in the mainstream school and the
most beneficial strategies in dealing with these difficulties’.
Emma’s work was highly commended by the judges.
Vicky O’Neill, submitted her final year
Education Studies project entitled ‘Music as a language
development tool’. Vicky’s work was highly commended
by the judges.
Laura Murray, submitted work from her third
year Education Studies module centred on learning in the foundation
stage. Her work was a critical examination of the Importance of
observations as assessment and planning tools in the foundation
stage classroom. Laura’s work was highly commended by the
judges.
