Students from St Mary’s and Stranmillis University Colleges
recently travelled to David Yellin College of Education in Jerusalem
to continue a discourse with Israeli students who themselves had
travelled to Belfast two weeks previously. The Intercultural Visit
was part of the joint Colleges Diversity and Mutual Understanding
programme which is funded by the Department for Employment and
Learning (DEL).
The students from St Mary’s and Stranmillis were able to
discuss identity and reconciliation from the perspective of a
post-conflict situation whilst the Israeli students discussed
the issues from the perspective of a society still in conflict.
Schools in both the Jewish and Arab quarters were visited and
the students talked with teachers and children who were engaged
in language, art, design and technology and science classes.
Mr Frank Quinn from St Mary’s and Dr Pamela Moffett from
Stranmillis attended with the students. Both Colleges were delighted
with the outcomes which they see as an excellent springboard for
their new joint IFI
(€1 million) CREDIT programme. |
