Finnish Academics

St Mary’s University College was delighted to welcome Dr Mira Kallio-Tavin and Professor Kevin Tavin from Aalto University in Helsinki. Both are highly respected academics in the fields of international art education and visual culture, respectively, and have written extensively on these areas. They both expressed a strong interest in developing ongoing relations with art education at St Mary’s.

During the two-day visit Dr Kallio-Tavin spoke to students and staff about the Finnish National Core Curriculum, and changes that are being planned currently, as well as outlined the broad curriculum offered in art education in Aalto University. Professor Tavin led a seminar with first-year BEd students, who take specialist modules in art. During the seminar he engaged the students in a stimulating discussion about visual culture and education.
