World Champion

St Mary’s student, Dermot McFeely, was crowned World Karate Champion at the World Karate Championships held in Caorle, Italy, from 11-13 October.

Dermot, from Claudy, combines his studies with daily training in Derry City alongside his coaches, Chris McFeely and Dermot McLaughlin.

Having taken up karate at the age of five, Dermot has represented Northern Ireland and Ireland at a number of international competitions and has performed exceptionally well, having placed between 2nd and 6th on five previous occasions.

The former pupil of St Columb’s College and North West Regional College is exceptionally dedicated to his karate training, including training to manage the persistent challenge of maintaining an ideal weight category.

Dermot runs his own club with his father in Claudy, County Derry. He captained the Ireland team (cadet, 15 to 17 year-old category) when he came second in European championships in 2009 held in Romania.
