A Place with a Mission.

The mission of St. Mary’s University College in 2010 is to make a distinctive contribution, in the Catholic tradition, to higher education in Northern Ireland. We do this through the provision of high quality courses of teacher education and liberal arts, where students are our first priority, and through active engagement with our local community.

St. Mary’s is an academic community committed to the search for meaning and value in the intellectual life, to academic excellence and to individual attention for students. Our educational aim is the development of the whole person in a Christian, value-sensitive environment in preparation for a lifetime of learning, leadership and service. We pride ourselves on being a friendly place to work or study in or just to visit.

The College is a religious, educational, cultural and social resource for the local community and is committed to work for the poor and powerless in particular.

In its work the College emphasizes economic regeneration and social development as important elements of building peace and justice in Ireland; we work with a wide range of partners including local community bodies in West Belfast.

We encourage our students to undertake part of their study at Universities and Colleges in other countries, particularly in other states of the European Union and in the United States of America.

The College is academically integrated with Queen’s University Belfast, but otherwise it is an autonomous higher education institution, founded by the Dominican Sisters in 1900 and now in the trusteeship of the Diocese of Down and Connor.

Wherever you come from, and from whatever tradition, you will certainly be made welcome at St. Mary’s.
