Short Description

Dr Angela Vaupel is Senior Lecturer in European Studies (Faculty of Liberal Arts) at St Mary’s University College, a college of Queen’s University Belfast.

She previously taught at the University of Ulster and has lecturing experiences at universities in Germany and the Netherlands. Her educational background includes:


  • PGCHET (Queen’s University Belfast)

  • PHD in German Literature (University of Ulster)

  • Erstes Staatsexamen in German and Dutch (RP Düsseldorf)

  • MA in Film Studies (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)



Angela is mainly teaching on the cultural aspects of the Liberal Arts Ireland in Europe modules (International Studies). She offers units on European film and literature, European history of art and music, European area studies and Identity Studies.

Current Research

Angela specialises in aspects of Cultural Studies, European Film and Literatures, and Exile Studies. She is particularly interested in representations of (minority) identity in the cultural media, the European dimension in education as well as cultural Irish-German relations.

Publications include:


  • Book chapters and journal articles on aspects of Cultural and Film Studies, the European dimension and interculturality in education, and Exile Studies.

  • A book on the German Reception of Exile Literature and the works of Lion Feuchtwanger (Zur Rezeption von Exilliteratur und Lion Feuchtwangers Werk in Deutschland; Bern: Peter Lang, 2007)

  • A book on Women in Nazi Film (Frauen im NS-Film; Hamburg: Dr Kovač, 2005)

  • Book reviews in academic journals and newsletters.


Angela is a member of the International Feuchtwanger Society (IFS) and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
