Gaelic games are very popular with students at St Mary’s
and there are teams for football (men and women), hurling and
camogie. The clubs are integrated under the banner of the Gaelic
Athletic Society.
The games are part and parcel of the St Mary’s tradition
of community and togetherness and they are a significant aspect,
for many, of the student experience.
Playing gaelic games at St Mary’s offers students a vital
opportunity to work with some of the top coaches in Ulster, as
well as playing with some of the best up and coming talent in
the province.
In addition to playing the games, students become involved in
club administration and help organise social and cultural events.
Gaelic games at St Mary’s has made a significant contribution
to the GAA in the province of Ulster over many decades. This contribution
is manifest in hundreds of volunteer coaches, players, referees
and administration. The greatest contribution however has been
to provide thousands of teachers who are well educated to develop
the games in schools.
There is a GAA Development Office in the College, located adjacent
to the Students’ Union. With the support of the Ulster Council
of the GAA the College has a GAA Development Officer in Ryan Mellon
(r.mellon@smucb.ac.uk),
who is an All-Ireland senior football championship winner in his
own right with Tyrone. Ryan supports the gaelic clubs and organises
a wide range of coaching and sports science courses for students.
The College gaelic games clubs would wish to support the wonderful
venture of www.cairdecatherine.com
in loving memory of our former student, the late Catherine Quinn.
