Generally, research activities by academic members of staff in the College fall into two categories:
• Education
• Politics and international studies

Education

Researchers in education are an expanding group of research active staff in the College. Most recent areas of research within education include:
• Integrating science and art to inspire learning and creativity
• The literature of 'The Troubles' and conflict reconciliation
• Literacy in Irish-medium education
• Special educational needs and inclusion
• Assessment of school experience in initial teacher education
• Science and technology competences for teaching and learning

Academic staff participate in a wide variety of national and international research projects in education, covering various themes and designs and using many different methodologies. These projects engage with teachers and pupils in schools, lecturers and students in higher education, and key stakeholders in various educational agencies. The College’s educational research is disseminated nationally and internationally. Educational research activity has led to conference presentations, the publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters in books, research reports and edited or authored books. The College’s growing reputation for educational research has led to increased collaboration with academics from a range of higher education institutions in Ireland, Great Britain and Europe.

Politics and international studies

Researchers in politics and international studies have established themselves as a prominent group of research active staff in the College. Most recent areas of research within politics and international studies include:
• Local and global development studies
• European culture, place and identity
• Political theory
• The curricula on Europe
• Julia Kristeva and feminist thought
• European Union development policy

These areas of research involve a number of diverse research questions and investigative designs and are approached from a range of perspectives. The majority of researchers employ analytical methods to investigate, for example, archival material and texts. Others adopt a social science approach, which involves gathering qualitative data from participants. This research category has resulted in the production and publication of books, chapters in books, keynote speaker papers, and journal articles. The range of research activities associated with this category has expanded in recent years with the introduction of the BA Liberal Arts degree. Academic staff members teaching this programme conduct research in new areas that enrich the College’s curriculum and academic environment.
