St Mary’s University College was the first higher educational
institution to provide Irish-medium initial teacher education
courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in September 1996.
We are a dedicated core Irish-medium team of two lecturers who
have many years of experience teaching in Irish-medium schools
and who have also engaged in research at higher degree level on
bilingualism and immersion education. We also collaborate with
subject specialists in a range of curricular areas to secure an
enjoyable and enriching educational experience for our students.
Students are supported in developing a high level of fluency in
Irish and in acquiring an array of teaching strategies appropriate
to bilingual education contexts. Irish-medium educational resources
and materials are available to students including the most up
to date materials produced by the Irish-medium Resource Unit which
is based in the College.
We value the partnerships we have developed with Irish-medium
schools and work in close collaboration with principals and teachers
in supporting students on School Experience. Our students on school
placement appreciate the support and encouragement they receive
from staff, pupils and parents. The schools in return appreciate
the commitment, energy and new ideas that our students bring to
classrooms.
We work closely with a range of other organisations which support
Irish-medium Education including: The Irish-medium Resource Unit
at St Mary’s University College, The Council for Irish-medium
Education, The Columban Initiative, Pobal and CEA.
